The Anchor Tenant – AVC

This is why I am excited about Singapore and think it will remain the leader for the SEA startup scene for years to come.

Singapore is full of anchor tenants in tech and media.

Google, facebook, apple, AirBnB, soon stripe and eventually Dyson will all be here building stuff.

We will continue to see more trailing tech spouses (TTS) which in turn will bring more employees or people who have a spouse working that will use their opportunity to build or join a startup.

The runoff from the anchor tenants is only beginning to be felt in Singapore and around the SEA region.

The Anchor Tenant – AVC:

Malls need anchor tenants. These are the stores that bring the folks to the mall so that they can discover all of the other amazing places to shop that sit between the big tenants.

Cities need the same. Particularly cities that are trying to develop new industries.

Born in America, Sriracha sauce tries its luck in Vietnam – Los Angeles Times

Love this story. Hat tip to https://darimulut.substack.com/p/longs-hard-work-in-manila-and-a-mystery

Good to see someone call out where the name actually comes from as well!

Born in America, Sriracha sauce tries its luck in Vietnam – Los Angeles Times:

He made his first sauces by hand in a bucket. Tran called one Sriracha, a version of the Si Racha chili sauce that traces back to a coastal town in Thailand. His had a deep red hue, a thick river of garlic, distilled vinegar and jalapeno peppers poured into a plastic bottle with a green top and a rooster logo. The rest is history.

He looks into the explosion in internet users across the region, how start-ups are taking advantage of that and some of the most interesting companies he has invested in.

KKR’s Kravis Sees Southeast Asia Winners in U.S.-China Trade War – Bloomberg

I guess a contrarian view of sorts where the USA/China trade war benefits SEA region. Possible but I assume there will be pain before the possible gains.

KKR & Co. is seeking to invest more in Southeast Asia, where companies are poised to benefit from the U.S.-China trade dispute, according to the private equity firm’s co-founder Henry Kravis.

China’s secret startup advantage: liquidity | TechCrunch

China’s secret startup advantage: liquidity | TechCrunch:

Faster liquidity can push cycle of returns, fundraising, reinvestment

This is the struggle with the SEA ecosystem. Just not enough liquidity yet to create the magical cycle.

USA and China have it. India with some of their monster exits creating some secondary action to enrich employees is crawling towards it.

As some of the big unicorns in SEA start to make some employees rich – there will be some mini cycles around that.

One should not knock what SEA and Razor of done to help get this going as well.
